We took the world’s 30 most populous countries and ran the stats to find out which country has the most lawyers per capita. Why only the top 30? Well, as we’re sure you can imagine, it gets much harder, for example, to find out lawyers per capita in The Vatican.
So which country has the most lawyers per head?

Wrong. (Don’t worry, we were wrong too.)
Out of the 30 most populous countries, the top ten countries by lawyers per capita are:
10: South Korea, with 1 lawyer for every 863 people.
9: Iran, with 1 lawyer for every 708 people.
8: Turkey, with 1 lawyer for every 648 people.
7: Russia, with 1 lawyer for every 583 people.
6: Germany, with 1 lawyer for every 524 people.
5: United Kingdom, with 1 lawyer for every 648 people.
4: Spain, with 1 lawyer for every 316 people.
3: USA, with 1 lawyer for every 256 people.
2: Italy, with 1 lawyer for every 201 people.
And the winner is…
1: Brazil, with 1 lawyer for every 194 people.

- In Brazil, one in every 194 people is a lawyer.
- In the Democratic Republic of Congo, there’s one for every 46,172 people.
- Spain has 50% more lawyers per head than the UK.
- India, which has just begun liberalising its legal market, has a population just behind China’s now and a lawyer count half of that.
