Smaller firms outperform headcount expectations

New analysis reveals which UK law firms are punching above their weight in the industry’s top rankings

New analysis of the UK legal sector has found that influence is no longer tied to size, with a number of firms significantly outperforming expectations based on headcount alone.

The data, drawn from the latest TBD Marketing LinkedInfluencer rankings, compares how many individuals are ranked at each firm when it comes to their social media performance against what would be expected based on its size, highlighting which firms are outperforming their peers. The findings highlight a group of firms consistently “punching above their weight”, challenging the assumption that larger firms dominate when it comes to individual recognition.

The analysis benchmarks how many ranked lawyers a firm would be expected to have in the top 1000 based on its headcount, then compares this to actual performance on LinkedIn. Firms with higher scores have more ranked individuals than expected, indicating they are outperforming peers in terms of visibility and recognition. It shows which firms are converting their size into influence most effectively, rather than simply rewarding scale alone.

Topping the list are Pinsent Masons and Hogan Lovells, each outperforming expectations by 15.2 ranked individuals, followed by Fletchers (9.7), Gunnercooke (8.9) and Mishcon de Reya (7.7). A broader top 20 shows a mix of global players and mid-sized firms, suggesting that influence is being driven by factors beyond scale alone.

The findings come at a time when firms are under increasing pressure to demonstrate expertise, visibility and differentiation in a crowded market, with individual rankings continuing to play a key role in how clients assess legal capability.

Simon Marshall, Founder at TBD Marketing, said:

“It’s clear that size alone is no longer a proxy for influence. Some of the firms leading the way are doing a much better job of building visibility around their people, and that’s translating into recognition.

What’s interesting is the mix. You’ve got large, established firms alongside more agile, mid-sized players who are clearly being more deliberate about how they position their lawyers in the market.”

Matthew Letts Director and Founder and CEO of Codified Strategy Limited which sponsors the latest report, added:

“Having a name and influencing the sector isn’t simply a function of scale. Firms that perform strongly tend to have a clear strategy around how they evidence expertise and engage with the research process.

There is a growing recognition that reputation is built through consistency and clarity. Firms that invest in how they present their strengths, rather than relying on legacy or size, are the ones seeing that reflected in the results.”

The LinkedInfluencer rankings spotlight who is actually driving influence on legal LinkedIn, based on meaningful engagement rather than surface metrics. They show how firms and individuals are building visibility, credibility and ultimately business through the platform.

The analysis also points to a broader shift in how legal influence is built. While larger firms still dominate in absolute numbers, the gap is narrowing, with mid-sized and challenger firms increasingly able to compete on visibility and perceived expertise.

As competition for both clients and talent intensifies, the findings suggest that firms able to clearly articulate their strengths and elevate their people will continue to outperform, regardless of headcount.
